A consumer unit is not the part of a home’s electrical system most people think about until a circuit starts tripping or an inspection raises concerns. Yet the choice of a metal consumer unit vs plastic one can affect fire safety, compliance and the long-term condition of your installation. For most new domestic consumer unit replacements, a metal enclosure is now the expected option – but the reason matters just as much as the material itself.

Metal consumer unit vs plastic: the key difference

A consumer unit, often called a fuse board or fuse box, distributes electricity around the property and contains protective devices such as circuit breakers, RCDs and RCBOs. These devices are designed to disconnect the supply when they detect an overload, short circuit or earth leakage fault.

The main difference is the enclosure surrounding those devices. A plastic consumer unit has a moulded insulated case. A metal consumer unit uses a non-combustible steel enclosure, normally with a metal lid and protective blanking plates.

Plastic units were widely installed in homes for many years and, when correctly installed and in good condition, their presence does not automatically mean a property is unsafe. However, wiring regulations changed in response to evidence that loose connections and overheating within consumer units could allow a fire to develop more quickly in a combustible enclosure.

A metal enclosure is designed to contain the effects of a fault and reduce the opportunity for fire to spread beyond the board. It is a practical safety measure, not simply a cosmetic upgrade.

Why metal consumer units are now standard

The concern is not that every plastic unit will fail. The concern is what could happen if a connection becomes loose over time. In a plastic enclosure, heat and flames can have more opportunity to escape or spread. Metal does not burn and offers greater containment.

Modern metal consumer units also include features that support a safer installation, such as secure cable entry points, metal gland plates and fire-resistant construction. The enclosure must still be properly installed, earthed where required and fitted with the correct protective devices. A metal board alone cannot make up for poor workmanship or unsuitable circuits.

Is a plastic consumer unit illegal?

No. Having an older plastic consumer unit does not automatically make it illegal, nor does it mean that it must be replaced immediately. Electrical standards are not generally retrospective, so an installation that was compliant when fitted is not automatically condemned because regulations have moved on.

What matters is its present condition, the quality of the installation and whether there are signs of damage, overheating, deterioration or inadequate protection. An Electrical Installation Condition Report, commonly known as an EICR, assesses these points and identifies observations that need attention.

Replacement may be advisable where a plastic board has cracked, is poorly mounted, has signs of heat damage, contains outdated fuse wire carriers, lacks RCD protection, has unsuitable circuit arrangements or has been altered repeatedly over the years. It may also make sense during a rewire, extension, kitchen upgrade, loft conversion or EV charger installation, when the existing board no longer has enough safe capacity.

Fire safety is only one part of the decision

A metal consumer unit offers clear benefits in the event of overheating, but choosing the right consumer unit involves more than selecting a steel box. The internal layout, circuit protection and condition of the supply all need careful consideration.

For example, a well-designed replacement board may use RCBO protection for individual circuits. This can provide additional fault protection while reducing disruption: if one circuit develops a fault, it is less likely to take out large sections of the property. Surge protection may also be appropriate, particularly where a home has sensitive electronics, solar PV equipment, smart controls or an EV charger.

An electrician should also assess earthing and bonding arrangements, the condition of the incoming supply, the number of circuits required and whether the board is in a suitable location. In an emergency, occupants should be able to reach the main switch without difficulty.

Cost: why like-for-like prices can be misleading

Metal consumer units usually cost more than older-style plastic equivalents, partly because of the enclosure itself and partly because modern installations require a higher specification of protective devices and testing. However, the material cost is only one element of a consumer unit upgrade.

A proper replacement involves safely isolating the electrical supply, checking each circuit, identifying faults, installing the new board, labelling circuits, testing the completed work and issuing the relevant certification.
